Donkey Basketball Saturday Feb 16th Warrenton HS 7pm

by Tryan Hartill
Saturday Feb 16th Warrenton Highschool 7pm

It’s finally here!

The Donkeys are on their way to the North Coast….

This Saturday the Kiwanis Club of Astoria-Warrenton is presenting Donkey Basketball. 2 teams will square off and play a game of hoops…except they must ride donkeys to play. Should be a fun night for the whole family.

Tip off is 7pm at the Warrenton High School…and if some players don’t show, you will probably see me on one of those donkeys…

Tickets can be bought at the door or by calling Swede at 338-7400. They are also giving them away on KCRX.

All proceeds go to those in need throughout the community.

Peter Iredale Photo

I hate to do a whole post for one photo, but I came across some very impressive camera work by Zeb Andrews. Have a look….

On the subject of photos….
Here is something interesting:

This is a cheeseburger in a can….the comments boil down to 3 categories:
  • This is the greatest achievement in the history of mankind.
  • This will be the downfall of humanity.
  • How can this be real….it must be a hoax.

Links are good for the soul!

by Tryan Hartill

Or something like that….anyway since I’m not feeling too creative and I have no stories to report, I’ll point you in the direction of some material from around the web.

Energy

Teen Build EV…Why can’t Detroit?

  • A 16 year old has converted a Mazda truck into a Electric vehicle with 6 grand and some ingenuity. It has a range of 50 miles….similar to the yet-to-be-released $20,000 Chevy Volt.

What has led us to LNG?

Politics

Obama Wins SC in Landslide

  • He wins with 54% of the vote. HRC and Edwards finish ahead among white voters, but black voters come out in huge numbers and give Obama the victory.

Don’t drop that soap!

  • The son of the Governor of Kansas has released a new prison board game called “Don’t drop that soap”.

Kemboi

  • NCO’s newest writer, Kemboi, has an excellent comment in his Cleavage of Political Clustering article. All of his posts are worth a read, you really have to slow down a bit to read them and many times there are multiple meanings in each sentence.

Fun

  • And finally, if you haven’t had a chance to clean your computer screen in a while, click this link….

Tired Blog

by Tryan Hartill

Oddly enough, some tired blogs have readers. In fact over the last 48 hours this tired site has received 1615 UNIQUE visitors. As in individual people reading NCO. This includes 1210 new visitors. Granted, about 900 new and unique visitors only read the Joe Gamm Parody post, but that still leaves 100-200 new readers from the local area.

Keep talking about it! And thanks to all that have sent people here.

I should be able to incorporate all the local sport scores over the next few weeks. I will be able to post all of the sports results from Warrenton and Astoria in the next week, with Seaside, Knappa and Jewell coming down the road. Since there is so many they will be very brief and probably only include final scores and a few box numbers unless they are big games/playoffs…..like the Seaside-Astoria Girls game tomorrow night. (Ast is ranked 9th and Seaside 10th…should be a good one hint-hint)
But if you know any local sports fans, let them know that they will be able to get the scores/results here on NCO very soon.

Hands of Peace held for MLK Jr Day

by Carrie Bartoldus

Representatives of AmeriCorp Oregon presented the First Annual Martin Luther Martin Luther King, Jr Day Community Celebration at Astoria High School, Monday evening. This year’s theme was “Hands of Peace”.

Peggy Ross, Director for the Governor’s Affirmative Action Office, read a letter from Governor Kulongoski, praising the City of Astoria and the AmeriCorp group for creating an annual celebration recognizing diversity and a commitment to actively working towards a unified community.

Local art was displayed around the room and school children read poems at the event. Dyani Lopez, Nicole De Penning, and Nate Hawkins read their own compositions. Leah Telen, Morgan Fruiht, Allison Vilday were unable to attend but their compositions were read by the Master of Ceremonies, Joemal Bonneau.

Oddities Reader Box

by Tryan Hartill

I just set up a new reader box about half way down the front page on the left. There are a bunch of different sources on this one, so they will be coming pretty fast….you might see 10 new ones every time you log on.

  • A cow that lived in a lady’s garage.

Wi Fi Hotspots in Astoria, Warrenton, Seaside

by Tryan Hartill

There has been some discussion on NCO about where folks can get WiFi locally. Now that more and more people have laptops, businesses are starting to try to lure customers by offering Wifi. This list will be an ongoing project and I will be updating it as the year goes on, so keep checking back for addition or
subtractions from the list. Links are provided to the businesses if available. and if they don’t have a website it will take you to Google Maps. There are many more WiFi spots in Clatsop County, but the following are only those that advertise free/open internet.
