Big Sturgeon

Tryan Hartill April 5, 2008
Big One

This Sturgeon was caught on the Fraser River. It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11’1’. It was 56’ around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in.

All Fraser River Sturgeon is catch and release only. This one maybe 100 years old.

This Sturgeon is Still alive, just worn out from the fight. They turned him loose after the photo.

That is incredible - although I’ve never caught one quite that big, I know they’re out there.  I would be very humbled, however, to catch a fish that is older than me!  The biggest I’ve ever caught was 37”, and I couldn’t keep it, but Oh My, what a day!

Was recreational sturgeon fishing open two weeks ago on the Willamette? I think not.

You’re right Gatorboy. After some investigating the fish in the photo was actually caught on the Fraser River.

I thought so. What gave it away was that the traditionaly comically inept Portland area sports fishermen could never have caught that fish because:

A. It would have taken three times the number of Portland sportsfishermen to land that fish than the number shown in the photo.

B. The fish would not have been released.

C. No mention was made as to how many capsized, sank or drowned in the endeavor.
