Astoria Girls BBall Dominate 5A St. Helens

From the opening tip the Astoria Girls basketball team overpowered a smaller and younger visiting St. Helens team and cruised to a 54-26 win at the Brickhouse. Astoria led 13-4 after the 1st quarter behind strong play by KJ Carr, who led all scorers with 19 points. During the second period the Fishermen stretched their lead to 19 points and were up 26-7 heading to the locker-room.

St. Helens came out in the 2nd half looking to catch the Fish with 3 pointers. They finished with 12 points total for the 3rd quarter, but Astoria still extended their lead by 2 points. The 4th quarter was more of the same, with Astoria dominating the boards and beating St. Helens to nearly every loose ball, even though they had a commanding lead. Latrica Lowe, the Lions only Senior, lead the team with 8 points and Sophomore McKinleigh Crandle finished with 6. For Astoria, Jamie Coggins knocked in 7 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, Alex Hillard scored 6 and Cristina Wilson had 6 rebounds and 3 points.

The win brings the Lady Fish to 8-2, they will play RA Long on Saturday at 7pm and will open Cowapa League on January 9th at Scappoose.

The loss moves St. Helens to 2-7 on the year.

The Lions did get the best of the Astoria JV team by a score of 23-21.
