Astoria Dance Takes 2nd at State

Tryan Hartill March 16, 2008

The Astoria High Pizazz team has been winning many of the competitions they have entered this year, so it was no surprise that they placed very well at the State level. Stayton won the first place trophy and Marist finished 3rd.
The team is coached by Jeanne Peterson.

thank you for the recognition of our great placing at the OSAA 4A schools State Dance team Competition......we are extremely proud of finishing in second place....we were the smallest sized team to finish....our nine dancers danced like ninety.....their dedication, discipline, and their great desire to bring home a trophy.....was realized....we had many wonderful fans from home in the stands at the Chiles Center, University of Portland, and hearing them cheer, and applaud was so exciting to the dancers....Our team captain, Anthony Kustura was named to the 2008 All-State team, and our co-catain, Camille Bryan, was honored as a scholar athlete....thanks so much for letting your readers know about our teams accomplishment!  very sincerely, Jeanne Peterson, coach, Astoria High School Dance team “Pizazz”.

Hi JP

I should have contacted you and written up a story and maybe tried to get some pictures, but just don’t have the resources right now. Hopefully down the road I will have a sports person to cover local sports stuff.

I have heard through the grapevine that your dance team would have won, but it was “too small”. You going to have a bigger team next year?

thanks for the reply...on March 30th...and here it is May 13th...first chance I have had to read your column and do a reply....we would love pictures and story for the coming season!....the dancers on Pizazz are so worthy of all of the credit they can get!....our size does not figure in to the judges criteria...there are three captions that the judges look at...Over All Effect, Execution, and Content!...the judges(nine of them at State)...score us according to those captions, then place us by ordinals, with no regard to the score!...we could win by score, but, lose by ordinals!....it is a real “rough” way to judge!!!...we are totally happy to have placed second...and we were the smallest team in the top five....Dance team judging is very, very subjective...where in basketball games, you know very well if a team is scoring , because you see the basketball going through that hoop!...there is no doubt!....judging Dance team is a “horse of a different color”...and that is the way it is...you have to compete to the best of your ability, have fun, work very hard...and know you have left it"all on the floor”!!!our kids consistently do that!...Coaching for nineteen years, now, we have been in the top five 17 out of the 19 years....champions three times...second twice, and the rest all 3rd, 4ths, and fifths!!!....the two years not in the top five, we were 6th and 7th!....proud of our records, and so proud to represent AHS, the students, the fans!....the community!!...thanks for your wonderful interest, and we will keep you posted on our new team for 2008-09...we have 11 dancers who are going to dance like 111!!!thanks again...Jeanne Peterson, Coach, AHS Dance Team!
