Overcast skies can’t keep fairgoers away
Inclement weather didn’t keep the crowds away from the fair Friday and as the clouds lifted more and more people flocked to the fair to enjoy the carnival rides, the beef bar-b-que, the animals shows and the live music. Friday’s schedule included more horse shows, goats and pygmy goats, dog shows and Rabbits/Cavies/Poultry/Cats/Pocket Pets along with the ever popular Bessie Bingo where you win money if the square you chose is where Bessie deposits her, um, well – makes her deposit.

Coyote Creek played until midnight, long after the last carny ride had closed down and slowly the cars and trucks began winding their way home. With a full day ahead hope that coffee stand is running full steam at 9:00 AM!
Saturday is the final day of fair and promises to be a full day of events and fun! While the schedule says there’s a bar-b-que from 2:00-5:30 that may just have taken place on Friday. Don’t fret, none, however there’s plenty of vittles for your varmints at the various venders.
Beginning at 9 AM there’s a Big Cluck Grill-Off – the 2nd Annual Oregon Fryer Commission’s Big Cluck Grill-Off, and Clatsop County Commissioner Ann Samuelson has dared any other commissioner or city councilperson to beat her team of backyard amateurs. With these kind of high stake bragging rights, plus a chance to represent Clatsop County in Salem at the State Fair AND win a Traeger Wood Pellet Grill, competition promises to be fierce. That is, if any of them can open their eyes that early!
There are more Dad Potter trials over in the horse arena, plus the Senior Trail. Cat showmanship in the small pet arena and a Fashion Revue out on the main stage. Back over in the horse arena will be the Drill Team and inside in the main arena will be the large and small animal costume contest.
One of the highlights of fair each year is the lumberjack contest where locals compete for the best time in a variety of events. Showing off agility, strength, endurance and careful observation of competitions’ weaknesses local loggers take one another on to be king of the tall timber, if just for one day.
Special Fair awards will be given out followed by a parade of champions. All the while the outdoor stage will have live musicians to entertain you while you sit and relax enjoying lunch from one of the vendors. Don’t forget to support the 4-H kids by buying from their Chicken Coop where they are serving up hamburgers, hotdogs, taco salad and milkshakes all for very, very affordable prices. The Dunes is there, too, with fine seafood along with the Lutheran Churches pie ala mode for desert!
Entertainment for Saturday starts off at 10:30 am with the Boys of Greenwood Glen, a Great 3-piece ensemble, playing Folk & Bluegrass. At noon is the 4-H Fashion Show. 12:45 is Fat Brando a local rock cover band. 2:30 has Boys of Greenwood Glen back until 4:30. Floating Glass Balls is a local club band playing originals and covers playing through the dinner hour and up to 7:00 PM when Texas Tribute takes over. A ZZ Top Tribute Band that promises to rock the fair to the end.
In the inside arena the market animals will be auctioned off. After a year of hard work young ones anxiously hope that top dollar is bid so that next year’s project can be bought, housed and fed and then maybe, just maybe, a little left over for some spending money at State Fair this year!

Kiddie Rides are still just as popular as ever

The Octopus still making the circuit

The roller coaster gets mixed reviews

Slip sliding away

Control your own destiny on the Tornado

A few die hard carny fans brave the weather

All ages enjoy the Merry-go-round

A break in the weather means a break for the moms and grandmoms

I think I did a good job, do you think I did a good job? I think I did, don’t you?

One of Clatsop Co’s finest fowls

Did I hear someone say chicken soup?

When you got it, flaunt it

Two geese alaying? Hey, we’re missing some geese

That’s the biggest poodle I’ve ever seen

Just don’t throw us into that thar briar patch

Do we WANT to be going to this market everyone keeps talking about?

Beats me if there’s another bar-b-que tomorrow, I’m just happy we made it to today’s!
