So what is the scoop out there among NCO readers? I’ll start on a few subjects….
1. Where is Patrick McGee? Is he ok?
2. Is anyone going to sign up for Dist. 3?
3. Cary Johnson will be speaking today (Tuesday) at the Kiwanis Meeting – 12 Noon @ the Golden Luck on Bond St. Stop by and have a listen…we will even buy you lunch!
4. Why do people honk when they drive through tunnels? Not just a “beep beep”…but just laying on the horn for 15-20 seconds?
5. In case you missed it, Floyd Holcum had a NOAA update this morning.
6. KAST is now streaming (almost…30 seconds behind) Live on the website. Can anyone tell me why I have trouble getting KAST with my radio and I live 1/2 mile away? Yet I can listen to Portland stations perfectly clear?

My prediction is 3. I know there are none yet and maybe they will all come in on the last day.
I like Carries “baseball” esque logo.
They honk just to scare the shite outta the guys coming the other way and also because it is really really loud
And I have the same problem in my car, no local stations at times but all kinds from the metro areas.

3. GO CARY!
4. The only accessory I use in my car in a tunnel is the headlights. I hadn’t particularly noticed other people leaning on their horns - but then I don’t go through many tunnels.
5. Thanks for the update.
6. If I ever get high speed internet out in my neck of the woods I’ll try it, but probably won’t bother until then.

IT’S A CAPYBARA!!!!!!!
According to Wikipedia.org:
pybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris,[2][3] also known as capibara, chigüiro and carpincho in Spanish,[4][5][6] and capivara in Portuguese[5]) is the largest living rodent in the world.[7] It is related to agouti, chinchillas, coyphillas, and guinea pigs.[1] Its common name, derived from Kapiÿva in the Guarani language,[5] means “master of the grasses"[8] while its scientific name, hydrochaeris, is Greek for “water hog”.[1]
Capybaras have heavy, barrel-shaped bodies and short heads with reddish-brown fur on the upper part of their body that turns yellowish-brown underneath. Adult capybaras may grow to 130 centimetres (4.3 ft), and weigh up to 65 kg (140 lb).[9][10][11][12] Capybaras have slightly webbed feet, no tail,[13] and 20 teeth.[14] Their back legs are slightly longer than their front legs and their muzzles are blunt with eyes, nostrils, and ears on top of their head.[13] Females are slightly heavier than males.[1]
Hasn’t anyone ever read “Cappyboppy?”

Regarding our streaming:
It will always be about 30 seconds behind “realtime” because of the way the software works. It needs to buffer the incoming audio to read “now playing” information to decide how to handle it.
When you start the streaming player it will automatically sense your connection speed and send you high or low bandwidth so it should work with just about any connection. If not we’d like to know about it.
It does take a few seconds to load and buffer the pre-roll ad from Gannaway Bros. After that plays the stream should connect.

In regards to the film crew coming article. It mentions the first movie filmed in Astoria. “The Fisherman’s Bride” from 1908. Makes you wonder if there might be a copy languishing in a vault somewhere. What I would not give to see that.
One movie not mentioned in the list is director Alan Parker’s “Come And See The Paradise” with Denis Quaid. The movie is long, slow and has an obligatory quality about it. Paradise concerns the interment of American citizens of Japanese ancestry during WWII. It came out right about the time the US gov made some reparations to those families and as the 1st Gulf War was starting. No one saw it and other than some good Astoria setings; the Bumble Bee shipyard, Alderbrook mud flats and a few colorful Astoria extras, they didn’t miss anything.
My favorite bit of Astoria set film work was done for the small screen; shot in the early 1960’s the episode of TV show Route 66 called “One Tiger To A Hill” forget the fact that Astoria is nowhere near that fabled road of song and screen. The crew that put that together really captures the area’s high points and tells a story that works on a lot of levels if you don’t mind a little sap mixed in.

Breaking News - Bomb Threat
There was a bomb threat found on the floor of the Astoria Junior High School Gym. All K-12 Astoria Public Schools are closing 3 hours early. So expect your children to be home 3 hours early. Mike Souder (hope I got his name right) in an interview on KAST just said if parents are not notified then there will be school tomorrow.
On Apr 21, 1:04 PM, RBiddlecome wrote:
Correction, Mike Sowder not Souder. He is the superintendant of Astoria public schools.
In Novemeber there was another bomb threat called into Knappa Highschool, and three the year before.
When I was attending Seaside Highschool we had one every year, but who ever called it in always made sure it was on a very nice sunny day. As a kid I thought it was great, but as an adult I realize it is a cruel prank. Kids just don’t think “it” can happen to them till it happens. Like the shooting in 1998 at Eugene’s Thurston High School.
Not only that it costs the school district money, in wasting at least a 1/2 day of school, plus the uneasiness it causes.
Hope this one also is a prank, and that nothing is found and nothing happens. Maybe it will also spur on the goal of having more cops and resources in Clatsop county.

That is of course her “Citizens for Clatsop Charter Integrity” organization. My understanding is that it’s unusual for a committee such as this to have such a large amount sitting around… the normal thing to do is to donate such funds to a charity or political campaign, or even return it. </quote>
Perhaps for the same reason that CRIODA shows a deficit of $960.43? Maybe, just maybe, you are reading the beginning balance of 2008? Please, have Sky explain this to you. ~ Carrie
On Apr 22, 9:38 AM, scott wrote:
Thanks Carrie, I’ll be happy to look into that and get back to you with an answer.
But no, it wouldn’t be for “the same reason” - it would be for a different reason, as it is a deficit, not that there was money left over, as is the case with your political action committee. Four thousand dollars is a substantial amount to have left over, in my view.
On Apr 22, 10:18 AM, RBiddlecome wrote:
In reading the link, it looks like there is actually a deficit. of $203.17. You are not reading the summary right I think. As Accounts Payable is over the Cash Balance amount.

Remaining “in the que” were the final expenditures. Thank-you, Scott for bringing that to my attention. If I had been Scott, I too would have been looking askance at the way that looks compared to many other committees’ zero balance. I should have looked in January and noticed that. A phone call to ORESTAR and I was able to figure out why the discrepancy was there and she found the transactions in our que. I am sure that Sky’s answer for CRIODA’s deficit will be the same. Learning the ORESTAR system has been ... real fun.

Now that it is a known fact that Scott can read, he should do some research on PAC’s and see just how many carry balances. I think he would be amazed.

I wanted you all to know about a few changes that have occurred in our
office over the last month. Many of you know that our Volunteer
Coordinator, Brandi Helligso, resigned last month to stay home with her
children. Because we had both the vacancy of the Public Information
Assistant position and the Volunteer Coordinator position, we saw an
opportunity to improve efficiencies within our office. Leslie Atkinson,
who was working out of class as both the Volunteer Coordinator and the
Public Information Assistant, will return to her former position but
will absorb the duties of the volunteer coordinator. Leslie is also
assisting Dean with handling union negotiations and other HR
responsibilities. Tom Bennett, who is serving in the interim as we post
the position of Community Relations Coordinator, will be handling all
the duties of the public information assistant as well as the
preparation of the agendas and packet information for the Board
meetings. Valerie Crafard will continue in her position with a few
added responsibilities including being the primary Clerk to the Board.
As a reminder, you can reach these employees by calling extension 1301
for Valerie, 1300 for Leslie and 1312 for Tom.
