Open House Aug. 27 Delves into forest management for Tillamook, Clatsop
The Oregon Department of Forestry has scheduled an open house Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Forest Grove’s Light and Power meeting room to discuss alternative management scenarios being developed for the Tillamook and Clatsop state forests.
Developing the alternative approaches is tied to the Board of Forestry’s work plan to improve forest management plans on state forests.
The open house will run from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The Light and Power building is at 1818 B St. in Forest Grove.
Preliminary information will be provided on the draft management strategies. Methods being developed to analyze computer-generated models of the scenarios also will be discussed.
The alternative management scenarios are being developed to achieve performance measure targets set by the Board of Forestry last November.
Both quantitative and qualitative targets were established across nine performance measures, which represent environmental, social and economic outcomes resulting from the management of these lands.
Two of the quantitative targets specify improvements to habitat and economic outputs. The targets seek to create complex (older) forest conditions on 20 percent of the landscape over the next 20 years while increasing revenue 30 percent to 35 percent.
A record of comments from those attending will be maintained and used, if possible, in the further development of strategies for these two state forests.
A diverse work group – made up of forest managers, planners and biologists – is developing the management scenarios and projecting scenario outcomes with computerized modeling.
A second open house is scheduled Oct. 13 to show outcomes from the finalized project. A report will be presented to the Board of Forestry Nov. 7.
