Oregon Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corp Move to Astoria
According to its website and promotional material The Oregon Crusaders (OC) program holds a deep-seated philosophy of Education Through Performance. Their purpose, according to their by-laws, is to provide education through performance in the areas of percussion, brass, dance and visual ensemble artistry. They believe that through their group’s achievement of artistic and performance excellence, and through the addition of a leadership curriculum that draws upon some of, what they consider to be, the leading leadership training methodologies used in corporate America, the organization provides the educational, cultural, interpersonal, physical and emotional growth necessary for our young people to become leaders.
The OC employs what many consider to be some the most talented design and instructional professionals in the country, designing the programs that approximately 100 talented performers convey through a powerful, athletic and artistic performance.
The origional Oregon Crusaders junior drum and bugle was founded in the early 70’s as the “Dickenson’s Oregon Crusaders” based in Clackamas County, Oregon. This corps would later merge with the “Imperial Cadets” to form what was called the “Imperial Crusaders”. The designation “Crusaders” was later used by Rick Wise who, in the fall of 1999, founded what was then called the “Southern Oregon Crusaders” based out of Medford, Oregon. Bill Perkins relocated the corps to the Portland Metro area and officially renamed the corps the “Oregon Crusaders” after the original Clackamas-based corps.
Since that time, the Crusaders has won the Division III championship and in 2006 received fourth place in the Division II Drum Corps International World Championships. The Oregon Crusaders is funded through the donations of individuals, the fees paid by marching members, and through other fund raising activities. Their budget is over $250,000 a year. Contributions are greatly appreciated.
Todd Zimbelman has been named Program Coordinator and Staff Coordinator. In these roles, Mr. Zimbelman will oversee the Oregon Crusaders’ creative and instructional staff and the group’s artistic program. Mr. Zimbelman has over 15 years of experience in marching music. He is the Director of Bands at Southridge High School in Beaverton, Oregon and has held a variety of positions at the high school and collegiate levels, including at the University of Oregon and the University of Texas at Arlington. He is active as an arranger, composer and marching music clinician, as well as being an adjudicator for several competitive circuits nation-wide. “The addition of Todd Zimbelman to our team is extremely exciting. It helps to showcase our commitment to making the Oregon Crusaders a world class performing arts organization. Todd represents the best in professional management of marching music programs, and with Ron Barnett (Corps Director), Jeff Bush (Percussion Caption Head) and Travis Moddison (Brass Caption Head) he will help us continue to build the foundation for our future success” stated Dr. Phil Marshall, Oregon Crusaders’ Executive Director.
As “Oregon’s Major League Team” in marching music, the Oregon Crusaders is a 501c3 non-profit youth performing arts organization that provides education through performance in the areas of percussion, brass, dance and visual ensemble performance. The 2008 season includes a nation-wide tour of competitions, culminating in the World Championships held in Indianapolis, Indiana.
They are finalized their move to Astoria this past week and on July 3rd will hold their first performance from 7-10 pm at Astoria stadium, 2111 Exchange Street. The Oregon Crusaders will next perform in the Seaside Parade on July 4th, starting at 11 AM and again at Quatat Park at 3 PM. July 6th they perform in Salem and July 8th in Hillsboro. If you wish to help the Oregon Crusaders with their tour, or learn more about them, go to oregoncrusaders.org.

Yeah, but why oh why oh why do they have to practice nonstop all day all night into the wee hours right behind our house?

Goddamn noisey s.o.bs., jeez, they aint local-why dont they go make that racket where they live? Why do they have to come down here and torture people trying get some peace and quie?

LOL~ OMG! Please, negotiate some peace directly with them! There is the Fairgrounds that they could practice at. Music there until 1 or 2 am almost all the time and whistles starting at 4 am when the logging of the storm damaged timber. Neighbors would welcome actual coordinated sound.
The Drum & Bugle corp is actually allowed to make all that noise right next to the hospital?

Are you people being serious? I live near all the “racket” and think its reasonable to listen to for a week or 2. It’s because of you that people don’t feel “welcome” in our community. Instead of complaining about new people coming and supporting our community and economy, why don’t you walking out your back yard and listen for a minute and see their hard work in action? I have a friend with a small child, who gets a kick out of the free entertainment. Why does it seem that no matter what we do, the people on this site ALWAYS have something negative to say? Sheesh!

Probably because silence around here is at a premium. Between all the traffic noise, barking dogs, barking sea lions, fog horns, illegal fireworks and the constant sounds of police, fire, ambulance and draw bridge sirens in the air. It would be nice to hear nothing for a change. It may be thrilling for the kids, but what about those people who do shift work and need to try to get some sleep with all that constant racket going on. Two weeks of this is a bit much.

You’re goddamn right we’re serious. Some of us people who have lived here for generations dont have day jobs-we work swingshifts and graveyards to keep people from dying. We need some quiet daylight hours to get some sleep so we can do our jobs. Lets see you try to sleep through that goddamm cacaphonious for two weeks. And tourists are nothing but one big pain in the wazoo.

This is crazy. They are only here for ONE week, and there are four Astoria High School Band students in that Corps. These are 70 young men and women doing amazing things instead of just “hanging out” and getting into trouble. You people obviously just have nothing better to do than complain. How many of you actually walked down to the middle school and watched what they are doing? This community should be encouraging young people to do postive things even if it “annoys” them for a few short days. And by the way, they never practiced past 930pm, so you are exaggerating the facts. I know this because I was up there watching them almost every day! And guess what? You live in a tourist area, so learn to deal with it or move somewhere else for crying out loud.

Guess you dont have anything better to do than just “hanging out” yourself....
And guess what? Tourists are the biggest pain in the ass to this town second only to Californians who’ve recently moved here.

And the most damaging of those citizens living here?
“Why, I was borned and raised here, I’m a native and my family is “royalty” around here so, you just better shut the hell up and go with the “Caste System” on everything cause that’s just the way it is.”

this is Astoria. If you knew anything about this place it would be that the only thing close to royalty around here is the royal butt pain brought to by the new elitist-know-it-all-gentrified -California-yuppie scum. We all know who they are, what they represent and how they have degraded the quality of life around here.
Save Oregon.

Drum & Bugle corp sounded great on the Fourth. Thank-you to the night shift for putting up with the noise. A reasonable solution should be negotiated. Astorians for livable neighborhoods http://home.earthlink.net/~aln-info/id12.html might be able to help you resolve the noise issue. They seem to have been able to solve the loud car issue. Some sort of compromise should be able to come about.
“Negative” comments are called “life”. If nothing is said people are content. It seems to be pretty much human tendancy to keep our mouths shut if we are pleased. We even have to have an award to get people to appreciate one another. But boy we do like to bitch. A forum like this one can give people who are “in charge” an idea of what people are “up in arms” about and what they are content enough to let matters ride. People call in (radio) or write (forums, newspaper) when they are agitated. They rarely write or call just to say, “Thanks, good job.” Sad, but true.
