Floyd Holcum Joins Port of Astoria Commission

After 7 votes the Port of Astoria Commission finally has a 5th Commissioner, local Astoria land developer Floyd Holcum. The final vote was 3-1 with Commissioner Kathy Sanders voting for Dan Brown. Earlier in the night the Commission had multiple tie votes. Commissioners Kathy Sanders and Dan Hess were impressed with a new applicant, Dan Brown of Seaside. Bill Hunsinger and Larry Pfund both liked Floyd Holcum and the first few vote tallies all failed to garner the necessary 3 votes needed to appoint a candidate. Dan Brown then pulled his name off the list to break the impasse. Sanders and Hess then went back to the candidate they wanted earlier – John Veenendaal, while Hunsinger and Pfund continued to vote for Holcum. Discussion followed and the Commission toyed with the notion of sending it to the County to decide, or even to the Governor.

Near the end of the discussion, Brown said to the Commission “those that voted for me, vote for Floyd”. “If you are in a deadlock, don’t send it out of this room”, said Brown. Sanders responded by saying, “I think we have to vote our conscience”. One last vote was taken and a visibly torn Hess said “I did it”, as he turned his ballot into Interim Port Director Ron Larsen to read to the audience.

Holcum will be sworn in at the next Port Meeting on Tuesday.
