PHONE SYSTEM UPGRADE PRODUCES MINOR GLITCHES

Staff July 6, 2008

In an effort to reduce operating costs while improving phone service, Clatsop County is currently undergoing a changeover of phone services, which has resulted in some minor service interruptions.

In particular, calls the last week of June could not be sent to voicemail. County residents might have noticed the problem when contacting departments such as the County Jail or Child Support Enforcement. There were also problems for people attempting to reach numbers serviced by automatic phone attendants, such as those seeking a building inspection.

Another problem involved Caller ID. For a short period of time after the upgrade, people who received phone calls from various county departments saw the phone number for the county manager’s office on their Caller ID. That problem has now been resolved, and Caller ID will reflect the main phone number for the particular department that made the call.

Mike Robison, director of Clatsop County Central Services, said while the changeover in service will produce cost savings, another key reason for the upgrade was to improve the survivability of the county’s communications systems during emergencies, which became a top priority for the county following last December’s windstorm.

The storm and resulting damage to phone and power lines knocked out telephone service locally for several days. The new upgrade is designed to enable the county to maintain telephone links between key locations in the county, Robison said.
