CLATSOP & TILLAMOOK COUNTIES RECEIVE COMMUNICATION GRANT FUNDS

Staff June 17, 2008

This past week, Clatsop and Tillamook Counties were notified they would be receiving an $819,200 grant award as part of an interoperability project between the two counties. The grant will establish a microwave communications system in Clatsop County linking not only Clatsop and Tillamook Counties but Columbia County as well. A project team made up of representatives from Tillamook and Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, 9-1-1 Centers, Emergency Management, and EMS participated in this joint grant request.

The new microwave communication’s system is in conjunction with the State’s plan to provide a high capacity “Microwave Freeway” accessible to state and local governments. The funds for this project will be used in partnership with the ongoing Oregon Wireless Interoperability Network (OWIN) to improve communications throughout the north coast. The grant will allow Tillamook County to add to their existing microwave network while establishing several new microwave sites in Clatsop County. The goal of the project group and OWIN is to improve local radio coverage and establish a statewide microwave network. The new microwave network will not only allow users to transmit radio signals over larger distances but data as well. This grant award is an excellent example of Clatsop and Tillamook County working together to meet the communication needs for emergency services on a daily basis as well as during emergencies.
