Clatsop Fairgrounds Garden Show Round Up

About the photo posted, my Oldest son said “Is it a trumpet flower?” I explained it was called a daffodil.

My two boys and I visited the Plant Sale and vendors that were set up in the main building of the Clatsop Fair & Expo Center.
Some of the vendors were; Lewis and Clark Nursery Landscaping (selling a variety of plants), Virtual Seeds – with hydroponic products and gardening supplies and more (my boys loved the bobble headed turtle), B G’s Antiques & Collectibles (can be found at Phog Bounder’s Antique Mall in Astoria or Seaside Antique Mall) showing off lots of neat gardening antiques, our favorites were some hand painted watering cans, The Astoria Community Garden Association, and OSTMAN FARM, from Seaside.

First we went in along the right side, and the boys looked at all the neat bird houses, and gardening books, then to the variety of rocks and mulching material used in making pathways or bed enhancements. Then my youngest pointed out the uniquely painted watering cans. Then we met Jennifer Moore from Lewis & Clark Nursery and chatted and bought 5 plants to put in our own garden.

Then we went and got a snack, French toast $4 and a side of fruit $3 and two cranberry juices, at just a $1, pretty good prices. Course we got all sticky. But while we ate we could hear the speaker, Glenn Andreson as he was piped in. A couple things he mentioned. His favorite garden tool is the post hole digger. He uses it to dig holes to plant, he fills the hole with broken off stems and such, so he “doesn’t have to worry about composting them” as they are being composted right there. He also discussed that gardeners like to overwork their gardens sometimes. And he made the case for letting aphids live, as the beneficial insects like to eat them, and in fact some have to eat thousands before they exit the pupae stage. “I get excited about seeing how many insects I can attract to my garden” stated Andreson.

Then we looked at the plant sale and picked out 5 other flowering plants, and some chives.. YUMM. When I was little my grandfather had a wonderful green thumb, and a huge greenhouse. But one of my favorite things, was a little patch of chives that my sister and I would nibble on as we were playing, those and the cherry tomatoes!

After picking out our plants we traversed the other side of the vendors, then headed to Lewis & Clark Nursery to get some Compost.. thanks for the advice Jennifer.

Anyway kids are now napping, and we plan to get those plants in the ground later today.
