Port Of Astoria Big Winner At Region 2

Air Service Grant Likely Coming To Port Of Astoria

Friday the Port of Astoria got some great news. Their two Connect Oregon Projects finished #1 and #2 at the Region 2 Committee Meeting.

Going in to Fridays Meeting, the Port of Astoria projects – Pier 2 Upgrades and Air Service – were #1 and #2 respectively. Coming out however they reversed roles and now Air Service is #1 and the Pier 2 Upgrades are #2. There will be one final Committee Meeting at the end of April that will send the final list to the Oregon Transportation Commission.

The Air Service is a joint application between the Port of Astoria and the City of Newport. A Request For Proposal (RFP) has been posted for the Astoria/Newport Air Service and is due in June.

The final Committee features one local resident, Lylla Gabel from Warrenton, who will join 25 others at the Portland Airport Holiday Inn for a final review.

More on Monday…..

This is very interesting. They have had trouble keeping flights coming to and out of Astoria. Hopefully this time is a charm. But also hopefully they don’t consider putting a tower in, for private pilots in the area that would not be too fun. Astoria has great runways though that are very wide, and hopefully elk will stay off the runway!

I am interested to know if there are companies anxious to fly here, and have a permanent service to PDX or SeaTack.

Huge congrats and major kudos to Ron Larsen.

It it were up to the commission, kathy sanders would still be studying it, bill hunsinger would put it all on hold pending a review by the longshoremen as to why all of the money couldn’t be spent on making a log export terminal at the port, larry fund.... he’s probably still wondering where exactly the airport is, dan hess, well at least larsen has some help.

Why don’t they just hire Ron as director, or manager, or whatever the hell they call it.

Updated with RFP added....it explains just about everything. I will look into whether the airlines are interested. Much of the Grant was set to be used as start up costs over the first few years. So if they are interested, now is when we should see some activity.

As far as I know Ron Larsen is airport manager. I am not sure this will garner much interest from airlines, as it has been tried before, I think Horizon and there was another airline that used to fly in and out of here.

I will have more on a follow up story, but....

Ron is the Interim-Port Director and Airport Manager at the moment.

This will be a bit different than before. Newport is now part of the deal and there will be a push to fly Cruise Ship passengers in to start their cruise in Astoria on the way up North to Alaska.

Thanks for the info, I did also notice that there would be a payment to the airline from the city of Newport and Astoria. So that subsidy might make a difference.

Well it looks like this grant is basically just to get it started. We as a community need to find a way to make it work (enough passengers to make it profit) most of which is good ideas and marketing. And it looks like the Connect Oregon group is willing to take the 4 million dollar chance that we can figure something out.
