Helo’s flying river patrols many times a day for law-enforcement and pollution checks. Boat crews (armed) with weapons carrying boarding parties either boarding by boat or helo many times weekly. These boarding parties are about 7 in numbers. Boarding teams are from Portland but another faction are from Seattle who even bring their own boats via trailer. Most people are blind to what is happening daily and weekly. Vessels are boarded at sea, enroute Astoria or Portland and at Astoria-Portland-Longview anchorage. The river is not as quiet and pristine as some would like to believe.

Was talking to a Foss guy the other day, did anybody realize in the past 2 years ship traffic has increased by 50%. Right on by to Longveiw, Kalama and Portland. Of course we have all noticed the increased pollution floating right on by. Oh The River Keepers seem to miss that I guess. To worried about stopping LNG. Kinda like not seeing the forest cause the trees are in the way.

Exactly Guy. The anti-folks would have us believe that LNG ships are just about the biggest ugliest ships in the world. It’s gotten to where I cringe whenever I hear the word “massive”. Everything is massive to them “massive ships” “massive pipeline”. Give me a break.
Talk to any of the river or bar pilots and they’ll tell you, “It’s just another ship”

I used to work for a containter shipping company that called on many ports in Ameraica. I was in the Alaska Division which had two ships a week from Seattle to Anchorage, one ship a week from Anchorage to Kodiak and Aluetian Chain and one a week servicing Cordova and Seward. Each ship had to have a pilot put on it at Port Nikiski near Kenai to bring it up Cook Inlet and upon leaving had to have the pilot picked off again. These are waters with tidal fluctuation of nearly thirty feet and in the winter block ice the size of a square city block. The technology for ships guidance and hazzard detection is so much more advanced now than forty years ago, it is hard to compare.
The Coast Guard has so much more sophisitacated intrumentation and equipment now days, I have no fear of them or the river/bar pilots to deal with LNG vessels.
