ASTORIA, Ore. — Coast Guard Sector Columbia River awarded three Columbia River Bar Pilot employees with U.S. Coast Guard Public Service Certificates of Merit during an award ceremony held at Sector Columbia River in Warrenton, Ore., Wednesday.

Capt. Bruce Jones, Sector Columbia River commander, presented the awards to Leroy Schlecht, George Ware, and Gerrald Tucker for rescuing a man stranded in the Columbia River, Dec. 29, 2012.

The three men were all working aboard a Columbia River Pilot vessel and immediately responded to a request for assistance from Coast Guard Sector Columbia River and the Astoria Police Dept. The men arrived on scene and rescued a man who was clinging to a steel tower, stranded in the Columbia River near Astoria.

    Leroy Schlecht Captain and Gerrald Tucker deck hand are employee’s of Foss Maritime Corporation and operate the Connor Foss harbor pilot boat based at 14th street Astoria. George Ware is along time Columbia River Bar Pilot who contracts with the Connor Foss for boarding inbound or outbound ships off Astoria.
