On Thursday, August 16, 2012, at 3:24 AM, Astoria Police were dispatched to an abandoned vehicle on the Megler bridge. Police arrived and found a four door, silver, Nissan Altima with Washington license plates parked with its emergency flashers on. There was a dog in the vehicle as well as a purse containing ID belonging to Traci Wirkkala a 41 year old female from Naselle. Wirkkala is described as being 5’05” tall and weighing 155 lbs. She has Brown eyes and brown hair.
Astoria Police contacted a family member of Wirkkala and released the dog to them. Wirkkala has not been located. The USCG was contacted and provided a helicopter to search the area. Wirkkala has been entered in the National Crime Information Center system and a local attempt to locate was issued.
Astoria Police are looking for any witnesses that may have seen the vehicle or Wirkkala prior to the vehicle being abandoned on the bridge. Astoria Police will continue to investigate. The Astoria Police Department has responded to similar incidents in the past. They have included people who have walked away from their car without notifying anyone, a person who used the ploy to stage a disappearance, and suicides. As a result the department will continue to keep an open mind as to what this incident is.
Anyone with information about the vehicle or Wirkkala is encouraged to contact Sergeant Eric Halverson. He can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or (503) 325-4411. Any information will be helpful.
