Clatsop County road workers were in the thick of last December’s record-setting windstorms braving the hurricane-force winds, falling trees and mudslides to open roads. On Wednesday, they received some well-deserved praise.
Patricia Roberts, chairperson of the Board of Commissioners, County Manager Scott Derickson, and Ed Wegner, director of the county Transportation and Development Department, hosted a lunchtime pizza party for the workers in the public works crew room.
On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, Roberts presented a resolution and order signed by herself and Derickson recognizing the crew for their “hard work, cooperation and good nature during challenging conditions and for service above and beyond the call of duty” during the Great Coastal Gale, as the Dec. 1-3 storm has been dubbed. Roberts made a point of shaking hands with each employee before the brief presentation.
The group listened attentively as she read the proclamation aloud. Derickson told the workers that, although other officials may have received more public attention, their hard work and commitment didn’t go unnoticed. The road workers ignored difficult conditions pulling back only when conditions became too perilous and, in some cases, put their own damaged homes and families’ needs on hold to take care of their community.
“You were on the point of the spear, and you did a fabulous job. I can’t tell you how many have praised the work that you did,” Derickson said. “You guys were a class act right at the time we needed it.”
Commissioner Jeff Hazen, who also came by to say his thanks, joked that the storm enabled him to experience loading a dump truck for his first time. A public works truck and crew ferried supplies from the Warrenton Costco store, where Hazen works, to the Red Cross shelter at Rilea Armed Forces Training Center during the storm. “You did a great job and we certainly appreciate it,” Hazen said.
