Furry Freak Flees Flakes

by Staff

Thank-you, you cute little Sciuromorpha, six more weeks of winter!

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow shortly before 7:30 a.m. to the cheers of more than 30,000 people from as far away as Alaska and Texas, one of the largest crowds in the 122-year history of the event in the central Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney.

The rodent was taken out of a tree stump on a hill called Gobbler’s Knob, and delivered his prognostication to William Cooper, President of Punxsutawneys Inner Circle who organizers say is the only person in the world who can speak “groundhog-ese.”

For a ten dollar annual membership fee you, too, can become part of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club and join in this celebration, perhaps eventually working your way up to the coveted inner circle! The initial fee covers an official membership card and … well, you will be encouraged to renew your card again next year!

Furthermore, according to the official website of Punxsutawney Phil, after joining you are invited to start your own Groundhog Club Chapter to carry on the tradition of this immortal rodent and Groundhog Day wherever you might be! By starting a Chapter with your friends and neighbors, your group will be the official celebrators of Groundhog Day in your area!

What do you get for becoming a Groundhog Club Chapter?

The website lists some pretty exciting benefits!

  • An official Groundhog Club Chapter Banner.
  • Listing of your Club’s activities, including pictures in the Newsletter (mailed to each member).
  • Free admission to Gobbler’s Knob throughout the year upon presentation of Membership Card (Entrance to Gobbler’s Knob is free anyway, but we need some use for the card).
  • Surprise gift from PUNX’Y PHIL.

Follow these easy steps to establish your own Groundhog Club Chapter

  • Gather ten or more Punxsutawney Phil fans who agree to become members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. Have each complete a chapter membership application

Membership in the Club is strictly limited to those who meet the following rigorous criteria:

  • Have a good sense of humor.
  • Have $10.00 per year for membership dues. (Basically covers mailing and processing costs. Anything extra goes to feed Phil. You wouldn’t believe what he eats in the summer!)
  • Agree to perpetuate and celebrate Groundhog Day robustly and heartily, and to forever defend and protect the reputation of the only true weather prognosticating groundhog – Punxsutawney Phil!
  • Report your activities and events to the Groundhog Club Inner Circle for the Groundhog Club Newsletter and Web site.
  • Complete a Chapter application and send it along with a one-time Chapter fee of $75 (if you would like an Official Club Banner) or $30 (if you don’t want the banner.)

No official Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has been formed in Clatsop County, to the best of our knowledge. This maybe your chance to make history! Register today!

In local weather snow fell throughout the day and tonight icy patches and fog made driving dangerous. Yep, six more weeks of winter! Yeah! Whoopee!
