We Don't Need FEMA Money

by Tryan Hartill

This is going to be a very unpopular post with both Democrats and Republicans, but I need to say it.

There is no reason our County needs anything from the Federal Government for the “Storm”. Getting this money to me seems like we are a bunch of kids begging Mom and Dad for some money because our bike got stolen.

Listening to David Wu on the radio sounded absolutely pathetic. Going on and on about how much we need this money “Just to survive”. And slamming Bush because he didn’t sign for the money fast enough. And acting like our personal savior because he is “bringing home the bacon”. All of this creates the attitude that it’s the Federal Governments job to give us money….when we are the ones that gave it to them in the first place through taxes. Because we want “more more more”, the Federal Government just gets larger and more powerful with every passing day. And when something gets more powerful it weakens everything else….our State Governments, our local Governments and each individual person.

All of this tax and spend merry-go-round really gets us nothing of value in the long run except wasted resources, 9.2 TRILLION dollars in debt and a larger and more powerful Government agency.

I say turn down the FEMA money and tell them to lower our taxes instead. Then if we want large and lavish-style Government, we can vote with a few other thousand people to do it.

What a horrible idea. “Sorry sir, I know that you are living in a borrowed tent and are living off Social Security, but it is going to be OK, we will lower tour taxes in 2010 by $40.” What a well thought out article.

Great Comment Aaron!

Joan

I’m talking about the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ONLY here, not aid in general.

And how exactly is the FEMA money going to go to someone living in a tent in Clatsop County? (Not to mention that I highly doubt anyone in Clatsop is living in a tent from the storm.) The money is targeted for roads and for reimbursing the costs of Local Governments.

Basically, I agree with you, Tryan. I heard there was a million board feet of timber blown down and, knowing that timber revenue is a big deal for our county, that would be my only area of concern. Although I don’t know if it will even be impacted, but if it were, that would probably be the only thing we might need.

I have not heard the amount of trees blown down. But if it is a million bf, thats only about $80,000 worth of timber (in terms of State revenue from sales and I 'm sure sure exactly how much trickles down to the County)….you sure it wasn’t more?

a million bf seems really lowball—we must be talking about 100k+ acres of state forest at least

At this point it is hard to know what is salvageable. Saw logs need to be a certain length and girth to be acceptable and pulp wood has totally different requirements. Being that Weyehauser has major blow-down and needs to deal with the timber they own so as to get at least some return on their 60 year investment in tree growth, there will be a glut of wood here, driving down the prices. A few years ago I was getting 12-15k for a truck load of saw logs and about $900 for a load of pulp. I’m expecting that to be cut buy 1/3, which really hurts anyone working in the woods these days. However the timber tax is based upon board feet, not on income.

Perhaps Joan doesn’t realize that FEMA STILL hasn’t released temporary housing (trailers), or money to pay for them, to Hurricane Katrina “victims” in New Orleans? Yeah. They’re from the gov’t and here to help you. ROFLMAO.

FEMA is an unConstitutional bureacracy, and needs to be disbanded.

btw – if we disbanded all the unConstitutional federal programs/agencies … we wouldn’t have a national debt.

People get better care from volunteer organizations (IE; Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc) than they do from gov’t.

Amazing how fast the government teat was offered up to those people, who with six days of warnings couldn’t be bothered to get ready for the storm.
Even more amazing is how fast some latch on to it and refuse to let go.

Pretty interesting…

So far well over 400 different people have read this article and only one person had any kind of argument against this oped…Joan.

Everything else was you’re a dumbass and a moron.

I expected better….so can someone please articulate why we need a bigger Federal Government than we have now. (And “now” I mean 35% larger than under Clinton)

FWIW –

Article 1, Section 8 lists the 18 powers of Congress.

Article 1, Section 9 lists 8 powers forbidden Congress.

Article 1, Section 10 lists the 3 powers forbidden States.

The 10th Amendment says anything not specifically covered, is the power of the States and People.

We don’t need a bigger gov’t, people. We must have a drastically smaller one, or admit we are no longer operating under the Constitutional Republic. If we acknowledge that we are no longer following the Constitution … or the “rule of law … then we must acknowledge that we are nothing more than an small step above anarchy.

Whoops I just now read your comment guy….I’m really on the ball ey?

When you say timber tax are you referring to the State Timber Revenues?

Those I believe sell by the Board Foot, but the revenue comes from the bidding when a set amount of forest is auctioned. So in a way it really is by income because the bidders will only bid up to a certain amount depending on how much they think they can make off the deal.

If there is a glut like you mention, or something else like a housing slowdown, the bid prices will fall and the County will bring in less money than in years past. Everything I see points to less revenue for the timber sales and I think the County really needs to watch this when they write up the budgets the next couple of years.

I understand where you are coming from and it would be political suicide for any elected to do it, (Except for Ron Paul) but it has to end somehow. Eventually the majority of the population will say enough is enough to a large and over-reaching Federal Government. I am at that point right now….along with about 10% of the voting public.

One of the truly important services that government can and should perform is to respond to a natural disaster. That’s the sort of thing I want my tax dollars spent on. If you want to reduce government overspending and abuse of power, then let’s talk about ending the war in Iraq.

I have been loud and clear about ending the war in Iraq.

We saw what happened in New Orleans last year. Many lives were lost due to FEMA meddling in that city during the Hurricane. The one thing that pissed me off the most is that they did not let people help one another. The city was locked down, so no regular citizens could help. That was abuse of power, responding to a disaster, waste of resources…. all in one ball of wax.

I can picture that happening here if there is another storm.
