UPDATE 5
The Oregonian just reported 10 min. ago that phones are working….nice! Maybe I’ll have internet!!
Ok…last internet stop before I head out of civilization. This whole deal has forced me to buy a laptop, which I was going to buy one before the first of the year anyway. There are internet hotspots all over Longview and hopefully it’s the same in Clatsop Co.
Got my 50 pounds of Dry Ice and hopefully that will last still the power comes back on.
Looks like Hwy 26 is still closed…Hwy 30 is still really muddy from the flood but is drivable and the trip didn’t take any longer than usual. Hwy 202 was still closed when I left at 1pm….there are close to 50 power poles, in the first 1 mile of 202, that just snapped off.
I can’t upload my pictures, but they pretty much tell the whole story. I could have taken 100’s more of the same thing, trees on houses and power lines.
I am going to search for some internet around the Astoria area, but I’m pretty sure it’s all out. Will update the next chance I get.
UPDATE 4
Hi All…..Wed. 2:50 Update
Had to drive to Longview for some internet service.
The destruction on the coast is pretty amazing, should have some pics up later if I can load them without my camera software.
Power is back on in a few places. Alderbrook is back on, but those were the only lights I saw until Westport. Hwy 26 is still closed and hwy 30 opened last night so there are tons of trucks with cargo heading toward the coast. Seems like half the power people are from Idaho. Gas is a bit of a problem as all the stations with the old fashion style pumps are out already. Chevron in Astoria and Shell in Seaside and Fred Meyer in Warrenton are pumping, but it’s a long wait.
Cell phones are mostly out, ATT is the only towers that are working, so everyone is trying to use those at the same time and they are not holding up to well.
Some landline phones are working, but we can only call people in the same town. I would say most people in the populated areas will have power by tomorrow. Some of the outline areas will have to wait a week, as some roads have lines down every 100 feet.
Dry Ice is pretty much all that we have to save our food. Lines of trucks are delivering, but they sell out in an hour or so.
Have not heard of any deaths in Clatsop Co. and the emergency rooms are not seeing very many people.
Everyone has been very helpful and is quick to lend a hand and the stores are not raising prices at all when they could jack them up and sell the same amount.
UPDATE #3
Power was off in Lewis and Clark, but just came back on….Photo about 2 miles out:
Wind is really blowing now…has increased to about the same speed as it was at noon today 50-60mph. Blue flashes are still happening near the Power sub-station at the bottom of the South Slope, but power is still on.
202 is still without power….
UPDATE #2
New Info @ 2:50
The Grid from the DMV to 9th St. on Marine Drive is back on!!! Yeah Power Crew!! Other smaller areas around town (on the hill) are still off….
Winds have dies down considerably….down to about 35 MPH on Youngs Bay and 25 MPH in Downtown Astoria.
UPDATE
New Info @ 2:15
Power is out from 9th St. West to DMV on Marine Drive. Part of Downtown is now out….South Slope Still on.
Costco is open for business as of 1:45. Fred Meyer is open for Biz, but will stay open even if the power goes via Generator.
Wet Dog couldn’t find lights to light the kitchen and is closing. No electronic lanterns at Freddies or Rite Aid….lots of flashlights still available.
Reports of a tree across Youngs River Road although quite a few miles out.
Heading back out with the camera…update in a few…
(End of New Info.)
Blue sparks are flying at the sub station near the CoastGuard Store….so I’m not sure how long the South Slope will be on.
According to the MSL computers, this is a very weak part of the storm. What is causing all the wind is a very high pressure area in Nevada….so the pressure really isn’t that low (29.41 inches)...it’s just that the pressure is so high down south. The winds will only get stronger, topping from 1am tonight to about 10 Monday morning….but the main part of the storm has not moved in the last 8 hours and is still about 1600 miles west of Oregon. It’s forecasted to move closer but we will see….the weather now is just the stuff that the main storm is “kicking in” at he moment.
View the latest Pacific Satellite Here
Top Gust in Astoria was 45.1 Knots at 11:30 and top gust at the mouth of the Columbia was 53 knots at 10:30.
The buoy that sits in the middle of the storm is at 29.05 inches.
Post other info in the comments if you have any…

I too have family in the Astoria area and have not been able to contact them by phone, I get the all circuits are busy recording however apparently some cell phones, Cingular I believe have service in Astoria. As a result the reports I am getting say There is some power in Warrenton. Safeway is selling gas in Astoria and making food available. Other stores are giving away food or making it available. Some good old fashioned entrepreneurs are selling generators on the street for a pretty penny. KMUN and KAST are broadcasting and you may be able to listen in on the web to KMUN http://www.coastradio.org/index5.html if you click on the simulcast box. KAST may be available on the web too, for some reason i can’t get it.Crews are having to replace many poles but they have secured extra manpower and are working round the clock. It sounds like the community is really pulling together to help one another. More info at www.dailyastorian.com

I also have family in Astoria. I am at school in Portland. I am able to contact them through email because they have a generator, but I was told that the cell tower was down and that is why cell phones do not work. My brother was able to call out using a tower in Washington across the river. He could not call me because I have a local number, but I can call him if he is in range of the tower. We have Verizon. This does not help you if your friends and family live in the rural parts though. From what I can find in the news (which does not seem to be much for some reason) there is quite a bit of damage, but I have not heard of any major injuries in the Astoria area. I do not know if this is helpful to anyone, but I pray that is is encouraging at least. All we can do is stay calm and wait.

Harthill, your updates are AMAZING! I really apreciate the situation update. For those of you with family there and you live elsewhere, I can appreciate your apprehension right now. My Mom was able to call out this afternoon (1:30 PST) The phones are very limited in Hammond. They can dial numbers that have the same prefix in them. Also, the ATT cell towers are somewhat working (which is what she used to call). The ATT store in Astoria is allowing residents to make 1 long-distance phone call which is great. Gas is tough to find and if found have long lines, as mentioned by Harthill. Dry ice, the same. The community commaraderie had been really strong and people have been helping each other out. Their only means of the outside world are radios. (See Pierce’s note if you want to know more about accessing the radios via web. Shawna, nothing on Pacific Power injuries so far. Will let you know if I see anything out on the internet. Sleep well Harthill. Looking forward to your next adventure :-)

As far as the Pacific Power report of one injury that I had questions about, it’s ok. Though I know that I read about this happenend….it isn’t concerning my direct ties now that I know everyone is OK.
Again, thank you for doing everything to keep the rest of the world calm…

I would like to say that the HAM community in Clatsop County was very, VERY helpful during this crisis. They provided reliable communications for Columbia Memorial Hospital (and others) to “the outside world”. I know of at least one instance where they were instrumental in getting fuel to keep the hospital’s generator running.
Unfortunately, it sounds like the HAMs over in Pacific County weren’t as well organized (or there isn’t a club). Nor did the Emergency Operations Center there communicate with the local radio stations to keep them updated, so the people in Pacific County had little (if any) idea of what was going on or estimated time on repairs.

Sorry I can’t update anything or write any posts lately. I still have no power or internet…I have not slept at my place since Saturday….When is this gonna end? I’m ready!!!!
BTW has anyone seen a Charter truck anywhere? Do they even know about the storm?

I went to Fish Hawk Lake at daylight today prior to the EOC meeting this a.m., my first chance to get there due to time/travel/ and obstacles. Those folks are in pretty bad shape, it was worse than 1996 for them, I have photos I’ll get to you when I get back from Portland Tryan. The sewage lagoon is washed out, 56 homes have water in them, virtually all docks are gone, boats went over the dam, debris everywhere. They had nothing but good things to say about our county road crew that came and helped them as soon as they could get there, only two went and they did an incredible job. Some homes have 3 feet of mud in their yards, the “sticky stuff”. I’ve been working on getting water for Jewell School on Monday, it’s looking like that will happen. Mary Blake, Our lady of victory Catholic Church, and the Moose in Seaside fed and or housed many, restaurants in Cannon Beach kicked in consistently as did many others, fire, city, and law enforcement in south county are terrific as well. More later. Passing out info on wells/ safe drinking water.

Forgot to mention that the Salmonberry bridge is completely washed out as well, but our county road guys put a pole in front so folks won’t accidently drive into it. 103 is damaged by Mullenbach rd., but you can go through, am going to advocate for building that area of the road up a number of feet. Also, Bakers Store stayed open even though their roof was really damaged, so thanks Brian and Suzi!! Bert & Gordon and crew kept Camp 18 open with generators, as always they helped us through another storm! Bye for now!
